THANK YOU JOE!!
Before tonight’s game with the San Jose Sharks, the Colorado Avalanche paid tribute to their and our Captain Joe Sakic. From 1992, while still in Québec, through the end of the 2008 – 2009 season he proudly wore a “C” emblazoned on his number 19 sweater. While the “C” does stand for Captain, in Super Joe’s case it meant so much more:
CANAIDAN: He was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada to Marijan and Slavica Sakic. If you ask almost anyone in the Great White North Sakic is a true Candian Hero. Leading his team to Gold Medal in the World Junior Championships (1988), World Cup (2004), World Championships (1994) as well as an Olympic in 2002. He would also lead teams to two Silver Medals in 1996 (World Cup) and 1991 (World Championships).
CHAMPION: In additon to the Silver and Gold metals he would lead the Avalance to Stanley Cups in 1996 (The first major sport title for the city of Denver), and 2001.
But if you ask me, the “C” stands for CLASS. In a day where players are in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. You never heard anyone say a bad thing about him. He was never in a contract dispute. He never heldout for more money. You never saw him on the police blotter. When he did make the local newscast for things of the ice it was for reading to school childern, visiting aling kids at childrens hospital, donating time to the Rocky Moutian food bank and helping a straded motorsit hours after winning the Stanley Cup. While other teams and sports award the a “C” to a specific player none appitmises what it truly means to live up to what it means more the Joe Sakic.
